As a boy, I cherished trips with my dad to Angel Stadium to watch Nolan Ryan pitch. Those evenings brimmed with strikeouts and broken records from a man many consider one of baseball’s greatest pitchers.
During these games, my father shared invaluable life lessons. One night, he picked up a Cracker Jack prize I’d tossed aside, unopened, and said, “Randy, the key to a happy life is finding positives in everything. Don’t focus on how small this prize seems. Instead, let every Cracker Jack gift remind you of the joy we share watching Nolan Ryan strike out batters and pitch no-hitters.” He encouraged me to apply this mindset to all of life’s moments, even its trials and tribulations.
In John 10:10 (KJV), Jesus says, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” In today’s world of Xbox, LED TVs, iPhones, and SocMedia, it’s more important than ever to teach our children to find joy in life’s simple things—like the delight of a Cracker Jack prize.
